Central Asia's Premier Year-Round Mountain Destination
Shymbulak (formerly Chimbulak) is Central Asia's largest ski resort, 25 kilometres from central Almaty in the Tian Shan. Its base station stands at 2,260 metres and the top lift reaches 3,200 metres, giving close to 1,000 metres of vertical — and because the city is only 40 minutes below, you can ski a morning here and be back for lunch downtown.
With modern infrastructure including high-speed gondolas and chairlifts, professional ski schools, and international-standard slopes, Shymbulak has hosted numerous international competitions including Asian Winter Games events. The resort provides stunning alpine scenery year-round, making it a must-visit destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers visiting Kazakhstan.

How steep does it get?
Most of Shymbulak's marked terrain sits between 15 and 25 degrees — comfortable intermediate pitch. The steep sections are the upper black runs dropping off the Talgar Pass, which reach roughly 35–40 degrees in their steepest pitches, plus the off-piste bowls beside them, which are steeper again and avalanche-prone. Nothing on the marked map is extreme by Alpine standards; the challenge here is altitude and hard-packed snow rather than gradient.
Ski Season, Lift Times and Ski-In Ski-Out
When the season runs
The lifts normally turn from mid-December to early April, with snowmaking on the lower runs extending both ends in thin years. February gives the most reliable cover; March gives the best combination of snow and sunshine. Lifts generally run from around 9am to 5pm, with limited night skiing on the lower slopes on selected evenings — check the day's schedule at the base, as it changes with conditions and holidays.
Can you ski in and out?
Yes, if you stay at the resort itself. The hotels clustered at the 2,260m base sit directly beside the lower lifts, so you can click in at the door and ski back to it at the end of the day. Staying in Almaty instead means the gondola from Medeu each morning — scenic, but it adds about an hour each way, and it queues badly on winter weekends. If ski-in ski-out matters to you, book at the base and go up the night before.
Shymbulak in Summer
Shymbulak stays open all summer and is a genuinely different place: the snow goes, alpine meadows come up green over the pistes, and the gondola keeps running to the Talgar Pass. Most summer visitors are not skiers at all — they ride up for the air and the view down the Malaya Almatinka valley towards the city.

Beginner Slopes
