Central Asia's Premier Year-Round Mountain Destination
Shymbulak (formerly Chimbulak) is Central Asia's largest ski resort, 25 kilometres from central Almaty in the Tian Shan. Its base station stands at 2,260 metres and the top lift reaches the Talgar Pass at about 3,160 metres (usually rounded to 3,200m), giving some 900 metres of vertical — and because the city is only 40 minutes below, you can ski a morning here and be back for lunch downtown.
With modern infrastructure including high-speed gondolas and chairlifts, professional ski schools, and international-standard slopes, Shymbulak has hosted numerous international competitions including Asian Winter Games events. The resort provides stunning alpine scenery year-round, making it a must-visit destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers visiting Kazakhstan.

How steep does it get?
Most of Shymbulak's marked terrain sits between 15 and 25 degrees — comfortable intermediate pitch. The steep sections are the upper black runs dropping off the Talgar Pass, which reach roughly 35–40 degrees in their steepest pitches, plus the off-piste bowls beside them, which are steeper again and avalanche-prone. Nothing on the marked map is extreme by Alpine standards; the challenge here is altitude and hard-packed snow rather than gradient.
Medeu–Shymbulak Cable Car: Opening Hours and Prices
The gondola starts beside the Medeu ice rink (1,690m) and climbs about 4.5km to the Shymbulak base (2,260m) in 15–20 minutes. From the base, two further lift stages continue to the Talgar Pass, so you can buy a ticket just to the resort or all the way to the top. It runs in winter and summer; you do not need to ski to ride it.
- Opening hours: the gondola is listed as 09:00–18:00, and ran from 08:30 in the 2025/26 ski season. Combi-1 runs to 17:00, Combi-2 to 16:30, the KKD-4 chairlift to 17:00 and Left Talgar 09:30–16:00. The last ride up is 30 minutes before each lift stops. Hours shift with season, weather and holidays — check the official site, shymbulak.com, on the day.
- Sightseeing (non-ski) tickets, 2026: Shymbulak Ticket return 12,000₸ adults, 4,000₸ children aged 6–14; one way 7,000₸ and 2,000₸; the glass-floored 360° ticket 14,000₸ and 3,000₸; return plus the KKD-4 chairlift 15,000₸ and 6,000₸. Combi-1 and Combi-2 return are also sold separately at 7,000₸ and 3,000₸, so confirm which lifts your ticket covers if you want to reach the Talgar Pass.
- Ski passes: an adult full-day pass was 15,500₸ in 2025/26, or 11,500–12,500₸ for a morning or afternoon, with a surcharge over the New Year holidays. New prices are usually set each autumn
- Where to buy: ticket desks at Medeu and the base, or online in advance, which skips the queue on busy weekends
- Autumn and spring closures: the lifts close for maintenance twice a year. In 2026 the gondola was shut from 13 to 30 April and from 12 October to 1 November, reopening on 2 November, with KKD-4 back on 10 November. If you are going in April or October, check first.
Prices above are published 2026 figures, not quotes — they rise most seasons. Wind can stop the upper lifts even when the gondola is running.
Ski Season, Lift Times and Ski-In Ski-Out
When the season runs
The ski season usually opens between late November and mid-December, once there is enough snow, and runs into April, with snowmaking on the lower runs extending both ends in thin years. At the end of October 2026 the 2026/27 opening date had not been announced. February gives the most reliable cover; March gives the best combination of snow and sunshine. Lifts generally run from around 9am to 5pm, with limited night skiing on the lower slopes on selected evenings — check the day's schedule at the base, as it changes with conditions and holidays.
Can you ski in and out?
Yes, if you stay at the resort itself. The hotels clustered at the 2,260m base sit directly beside the lower lifts, so you can click in at the door and ski back to it at the end of the day. Staying in Almaty instead means the gondola from Medeu each morning — scenic, but it adds about an hour each way, and it queues badly on winter weekends. If ski-in ski-out matters to you, book at the base and go up the night before.
Shymbulak in Summer
Shymbulak stays open all summer and is a genuinely different place: the snow goes, alpine meadows come up green over the pistes, and the gondola keeps running to the Talgar Pass. Most summer visitors are not skiers at all — they ride up for the air and the view down the Malaya Almatinka valley towards the city.
- The gondola ride from Medeu through the base station to 3,200m, roughly 25 minutes end to end, is the main draw
- Hiking from the top station along the ridge, with the Talgar peaks in view; take a layer, it is 10–15°C cooler than Almaty and the wind is constant
- Mountain biking on marked descents, with bike carriage on the lifts
- Medeu skating rink at the bottom is closed for reconstruction, due to finish by the end of 2027, though the gondola beside it still runs
