Kazakhstan's Grand Canyon - 12 Million Years in the Making
Charyn Canyon is Kazakhstan's answer to the Grand Canyon: 154 kilometres of red sandstone gorge cut by the Charyn River over some 12 million years. Almost every visitor comes for one two-kilometre stretch of it — the Valley of Castles, where erosion has left freestanding towers and fins that really do read as ruined fortresses when the low sun hits them.
The canyon rim sits at roughly 1,000–1,100 metres and the river runs about 150–300 metres below it. It is around 200km east of Almaty on good road, which makes it the most-done day trip from Almaty and an easy first stop on the way to Lake Kaindy and the Kolsai Lakes.
The most famous section, the Valley of Castles, features towering sedimentary rock pillars resembling medieval fortresses, reaching up to 300 meters in height. This geological masterpiece offers some of the most stunning landscapes in Central Asia.

Valley of Castles
The canyon's most iconic section, featuring towering rock formations resembling ancient castles and fortresses. A 2km trail descends into the canyon floor, offering incredible photo opportunities and close-up views of the geological wonders.
Charyn River
The river carving through the canyon provides a serene contrast to the rugged cliffs. Walk along its banks, enjoy the riparian ecosystem, and spot local wildlife including birds and small mammals.
Viewpoints
Multiple panoramic viewpoints along the canyon rim offer breathtaking vistas. Sunrise and sunset provide the best lighting for photography, when the rocks glow in vibrant reds and oranges.
Moon Canyon
A less-visited section featuring otherworldly white and grey rock formations resembling a lunar landscape. Perfect for those seeking solitude and unique geological features.
